WINDOW & SASH RESTORATION
(The Process)

The restoration process of a historic window starts by removing the sash from the existing opening and transporting the handcrafted frames to our shop. Typically, the exposed opening is protected by an existing storm window.  If this is not the case, new storms or temporary protection can be installed.  Once in our facility, all existing hardware and glass are removed and the restoration process.

If the joinery is failing, we will disassemble all components and repair decay as required.  Dutchman repairs are performed when possible, otherwise unsalvageable components are recreated with old growth pine or like in kind hardwood.  Existing finishes are then stripped down to bare wood in preparation for paint.

Upon reassembly, the sash components are carefully glued with waterproof adhesives and joined back together.  Newly recreated elements are seamlessly blended with the original.  The sash is then protected with an oil based primer prior to glazing.  Any missing or broken glass is replaced with like in kind.  All original and replaced panes are rebedded and glazed with Sarco putty for a renewed, watertight seal.

Once the glazing has cured, a second coat of oil based primer is spray applied on exterior and interior surfaces. Exterior topcoats (2-3) are spray applied with the customer’s choice of premium oil based or acrylic paint to the color and sheen specified.  Our standard oil exterior finish utilizes Benjamin Moore Ultra Spec with a semi-gloss sheen. For acrylic finishes, we offer Fine Paints of Europe Eco satin (urethane-alkyd), Benjamin Moore Aura satin (alkyd) and California Ultra 2010 low luster (alkyd).  Interior topcoats receive (2-3) spray coats of oil based Benjamin Moore satin Impervo to the color specified.  The interior surfaces can be topcoated with an interior latex upon request.  Our standard options are C2 Cabinet & Trim paint and Benjamin Moore Advance.

Integral to our restoration service, is the installation of hardware and weatherstripping.  Existing hardware can be maintained and restored or new can be introduced.  We are experts in retrofitting and installing bronze interlock weatherstrip systems during the installation of your newly restored sash.  Double hung sash will receive new sash cord and be properly counterbalanced with their window weights.  We highly recommend that you protect your investment with new or updated triple track storm windows.
